Michiel joined Badleys in April 2007. His interest in structural geology started during his Master’s study at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (The Netherlands). His thesis work contributed to the publication of a geological map of Newfoundland (Canada).
In early 2007 he completed his PhD at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium) focussing on early Variscan geodynamics in the Armorican massif. Based on an extensive field-based structural analysis and a fluid inclusion analysis, he was able to demonstrate the importance of contraction-dominated deformation and incipient strain partitioning in a high-strain slate belt (the Monts d’Arrée).
In his spare time Michiel enjoys playing guitar.
